Urge Congress to Protect the Healthcare Mandate

Urge Congress to Protect the Health Care Mandate

The House of Representatives is considering the SIMPLE Fairness Act (H.R. 4118), which would undercut the Affordable Care Act and delay the implementation of the individual mandate. The landmark health reform law extends coverage to millions of Americans and strengthens existing insurance coverage through mandates on individuals and businesses to purchase or provide healthcare coverage.

Since open enrollment in the new health care exchanges began on October 1, over 4 million Americans have gained private health insurance, with millions more enrolling in Medicaid and other programs. The law has already provided tremendous benefits, such as the ability for young adults to stay on their parents’ health plans until age 26, a ban on insurance plans denying coverage to those with pre-existing conditions and the gradual closing of the so-called Medicare “doughnut hole.”

Members of Congress must reject efforts like the SIMPLE Fairness Act, which would deprive Americans of the inclusive, affordable, accessible and accountable healthcare they deserve. The House has already held 49 votes to defund, repeal, or weaken the Affordable Care Act, wasting precious legislative time on this misguided effort. As the March 31 deadline for enrollment draws near, now is the time to continue to work toward implementation, not delay.

Jewish Values and Health Care

Jewish tradition is emphatic about the importance of the community ensuring healthcare for its vulnerable members. As with all Jewish communal welfare efforts, a combination of private and public mechanisms was used to ensure the availability of healthcare in self-governing Jewish communities. In some Jewish communities, public health programs and/or regulation of fees and medicine costs were used to ensure coverage. In this spirit, the Reform Movement has been a leading voice in the faith community advocating for the passage and implementation of the ACA. We must continue to fulfill our responsibility to lift up the moral voice for health insurance reform by telling our Members of Congress to reject bills that weaken the ACA.
