Oppose Limits to a Woman’s Right to Choose!

Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) has introduced The Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act (S. 1670), a bill that will prohibit abortions after 20 weeks of gestation, with very few exceptions for life of the mother and rape or incest when reported to legal authorities. The bill severely limits a woman’s autonomy over her own body, and refuses her the ability to make decisions according to her own beliefs and conscience. 1.5% of abortions happen after the 20-week mark; the women who need access to these kinds of abortions are often facing desperate circumstances. For example, some birth defects or fetal diseases are undetectable until later in pregnancy, around the 20-week mark. S. 1670 is a threat to women, likely unconstitutional, and should not pass the Senate.

Protecting Reproductive Rights

Since the Supreme Court decision in Roe v. Wade in 1973, American women’s right to make their own reproductive decisions – including decisions related to abortion – has been protected. Yet, anti-choice advocates have been working to restrict access to abortion through many means, from laws limiting the use of public funds that particularly impact low income women, to rules that take medical decisions out of doctors’ hands by proscribing certain procedures.

Jewish Values

Jewish tradition teaches that all life is sacred. Although an unborn fetus is precious and to be protected, Judaism looks on the life and well-being of the mother as central; women are required to care for their own health above all else, placing a higher value on existing life than on potential life. There are many examples in which our tradition teaches that abortion is to be condoned, but in some cases, it is mandated.

Grounded in these affirmations of a woman’s right to choose and of reproductive rights, we strongly oppose S. 1670.

Take Action

Urge your Senators to vote against this dangerous bill, which would drastically limit a woman’s right to make her own decisions about her reproductive health.
