On January 5, Senate Bill 6 was introduced in the Texas legislature. This bill specifically targets transgender and gender nonconforming individuals by requiring people in government buildings and public schools to use the bathroom corresponding with the sex assigned to them at birth.
Simply put, the issue of restrooms is being used to perpetuate a false narrative about a supposed threat posed by transgender people, particularly to women and girls’ safety. Studies repeatedly show that transgender individuals are more likely to be victims of harassment in public spaces, rather than its cause. We must reject this untrue and harmful rhetoric.
Urge your state legislator to oppose SB 6.
Judaism teaches that all human beings are created b'tzelem Elohim, in the Divine image (Genesis 1:27). The belief that the stamp of the Divine is present in all humans is fundamental to Reform Judaism and teaches us that we cannot tolerate discrimination against any person because of their identity.
