Tell Senators: Oppose Nomination of David Friedman for U.S. Ambassador to Israel

President Trump has nominated David Friedman to be the U.S. Ambassador to Israel. Mr. Friedman has long been an outspoken voice on Israel-related issues, advocating for policies that would alter decades of U.S. policy toward Israel. This includes his support for a one-state solution and financially supporting West Bank settlements. While Mr. Friedman moderated some of his positions during his confirmation hearing, we simply can’t accept that Mr. Friedman’s suddenly altered views replace a long and detailed record that he has on Israel, both in his stated comments and his philanthropy. For these reasons, the Reform Movement opposes Mr. Friedman’s nomination.

Urge your Senators to reject the nomination of David Friedman as U.S. Ambassador to Israel.

  • Background:

Mr. Friedman has a long connection to Israel and has expressed his deep love for the state. At the same time, Mr. Friedman lacks the basic qualifications for this ambassadorial position. Unlike every other past holder of this important post, Mr. Friedman has no professional foreign policy experience. He has never been involved in these issues other than as a zealous partisan and financial supporter of settlement activity.

Mr. Friedman also has an extensive public record of extreme positions that if implemented would reflect fundamental shifts in long established U.S. policies embraced by Republican and Democratic administrations alike. Mr. Friedman’s extreme views on key issues related to the two-state solution, Israel’s borders, settlements, and the location of the U.S. Embassy are detrimental to peace and a strong U.S.-Israel relationship.

Mr. Friedman also lacks the necessary temperament for such a sensitive position. He has publicly and harshly disparaged organizations representing large constituencies of American Jews. While we appreciate that during his hearing Mr. Friedman recognized the problematic nature of these remarks, any American ambassador, let alone one in such a sensitive post, must possesses a personality that instinctively seeks to bridge divides, rather than inflame divisions.

    Jewish Values:

A robust U.S.-Israel relationship serves the interests and reflects the values of both nations. Israel has no more longstanding friend and the U.S. has no stronger ally in the region.
