I am marching today and I demand common sense gun legislation.

Last weekend, we joined with students across the nation as together, we Marched for Our Lives to demand common sense gun legislation.

A month has passed since the devastating mass shooting in Parkland, Florida, when 17 students and teachers were killed and 14 were injured by a gunman armed with an assault weapon at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. As Reform Jews, we cannot afford to stay silent. We marched to demand that our legislators take immediate action to stop these massacres.

Use the letter provided to email your member of Congress. We encourage you to add your own reasons why gun violence prevention matters to you.

Background:

Gun violence is a daily reality for people living in communities across America. Gun violence kills over 30,000 Americans every single year and the rate of gun violence in the United States is up to 25 times higher than other developed countries. The devastating massacre in Parkland was the 18th school shooting of 2018. Enough is enough.

Reeling from this latest tragedy, students around the country are rising up to demand an end to gun violence, once and for all. Students from Parkland called for a March for Our Lives, which took place in Washington, DC and in cities around the world, and the Reform Movement responded.

Led by teens from NFTY – The Reform Jewish Youth Movement, Reform Jews marched across the country to demand that our elected officials act to stem the tide of gun violence sweeping this nation.

Our elected officials must hear from their constituents that inaction is not an option. No more empty calls for thoughts and prayers. No more excuses for abrogating their basic responsibility to protect the safety of the American people

We call upon Congress to enact universal background checks and ban the purchase and sale of assault weapons and high capacity magazines. We must fix our broken background check system, which allows potentially dangerous and unqualified people to purchase guns. We declare that weapons of war belong on the battlefield, not in our backyards. We march to demand action.

Jewish values:

Leviticus 19:16 instructs us, “Do not stand idly by while your neighbor’s blood is shed.” For too long, Congress has stood idly by, mass shooting after mass shooting, refusing to take action to prevent the next massacre from happening. May the 17 lives lost in Parkland not be lost in vain.

Further, the Talmud teaches us that “He who takes one life, it is as though he has destroyed the universe, and he who saves one life, it is as though he has saved the universe” (Mishnah Sanhedrin 4:5). Each victim of gun violence leaves behind loving parents and siblings, family and friends, and every day, 93 universes are shattered by gun violence in the United States. As Reform Jews, it is our duty to demand that Congress take action to pass common sense gun legislation and save countless innocent lives.
